Blackman Rd Updated 8-20-2010

Date of Blackman Road Reopen: 8-22-2010

Blackman Road will reopen to traffic between Battlefield Road and Farm Road 156 (Sunset Street), at 6 a.m. on Sunday, August 22nd. Work will continue along the edges of the roadway as grading continues for sidewalks. Finished grading and seeding and mulching will follow, after which the contractor will place the final layer of asphalt and complete the signing and striping.

Although the road will be open to traffic on Sunday, it will remain an active work zone for several more weeks. A Work Zone Speed Limit of 20 mph will be posted on Blackman Road until the project is complete. Motorists are advised to use caution, obey the work zone speed limit and look out for workers and equipment crossing the roadway.

In preparation for the reopening of Blackman Road, stop signs will be installed on Battlefield Road for eastbound and westbound traffic on Friday afternoon. Advanced electronic message boards and flagging will alert motorists to this change. Previously, eastbound and westbound traffic has not stopped at the intersection due to the closure of Blackman Road.

Expected Date of Blackman Road Reopen: 8-22-2010

Barring significant weather delays, Greene County's contractor is expected to reopen Blackman Road to through traffic between Farm Road 156 (Sunset Street) and Battlefield Road by August 22nd. This closure was necessary to allow the contractor to entirely rebuild the roadway, which had to be raised as much as six feet in some spots and lowered as much as four feet in others. The road will reopen to traffic without the final asphalt driving surface, which will be added during the final stages of the project. Construction of sidewalks, final grading, seed & mulch, signing and striping will also need to be completed after the road reopens.

Prior to the reopening of Blackman Road, motorists will need to contintue to use alternate routes as through traffic on Blackman Road will be prohibited. Beginning Thursday, August 12, access to residences and businesses along Blackman Road, including the new Dan Kinney Park, will be restricted to the south only. NO THROUGH TRAFFIC WILL BE ALLOWED ON BLACKMAN ROAD BETWEEN FARM ROAD 156 AND LOMITA DURING THIS TIME. Motorists will need to use Battlefield Road, Ruskin Way & Rosebriar Street to access Blackman Road. Signing for the Dan Kinney Park will be in place on Battlefield Road.

Blackman Rd Updated 3-3-2010

Expected Date of Completion: 7-31-2010

The Greene County Highway Department will close the intersection of Blackman Rd at Battlefield Rd at 9 a.m. Monday March 8, 2010, weather permitting.

This closure will allow the county's contractor to obliterate the existing asphalt and raise the intersection about three feet, to match the new elevation of Battlefield Road, currently under construction. The adjacent portion of Battlefield, between Woodstock Avenue and Blackman, remains closed to through traffic. Local access to homes and businesses in the area will be maintained.

Construction on the intersection of Blackman and Battlefield intersection was originally scheduled to begin last fall. However, work on Battlefield has been delayed due to colder and wetter than normal weather conditions, thus delaying the intersection project. The county expects all work on Battlefield to be completed by May, allowing it to reopen to traffic. Blackman Road, just north of Battlefield, is scheduled to reopen at the end of July.

West of the intersection, Battlefield Road is being raised to eliminate the small dips and crests in the old roadway. This will also improve the safety of the intersection by smoothing the angle of Blackman as it approaches Battlefield. Both roads will be widened for left turn lanes. The project also includes curbs, gutter, sidewalks, street lighting and underground drainage improvements.

Motorists are encouraged to bypass the new closure by using Farm Road 193 and Farm Road 156 (Sunset) to access Blackman Road.

Extension of Battlefield Road Closure due to Inclement Weather Updated 2-10-10

Due to the winter weather we have experienced for the last several weeks, Greene County's contractor has not been able to work on construction of Battlefield Road. Since December 22, operations to haul in fill dirt and compact it properly for the new roadway have been shut down due to freezing temperatures and winter precipitation. Once the snow is gone, it will take several days of warmer temperatures and sunshine to dry out the ground enough to support construction equipment and activities.

This delay has pushed off the reopening of Battlefield Road past the late February time frame we originally announced. At this time, the contractor estimates that Battlefield Road will remain closed until May. Weather conditions over the remainder of February, March and April will have a lot to do with whether the contractor can meet this new time frame.

We understand that the closure of Battlefield Road impacts many folks, including those who use it to get to work or school everyday as well as those who live along the alternate routes. We also know that delays such as this make the impact more difficult. and we apologize for the inconvenience. Below is a copy of the press release we are sending out today. We will continue to keep you posted as conditions improve and the project progresses.

In the meantime, we thank you for your continued patience and cooperation.

Orignial Project Information
Battlefield Rd between Woodstock Avenue and Blackman Rd is closed. Woodstock will be open to traffic, but no through traffic will be allowed east of Woodstock. Closure is due to road fill being placed in the area as well as a 36 in. CU water main. Road work is part of the final phase of improvements on Blackman Road from Sunshine Street to Battlefield Road. Motorists are asked to avoid the area and plan alternate routes.

Contractor is also placing gas line along the west side of Blackman Road, north of Battlefield Road. Although this work is being done off of the roadway, drivers are asked to use caution when driving through the work zone.

During the final phase of this improvement, Blackman will be widened to three lanes between Farm Road 156 (Sunset Street) and Battlefield Road, with curb and gutter, stormwater improvements and new sidewalks. The entire project is expected to take 10 months to complete (weather permitting). Construction is undertaken in conjunction with the construction of the Jack Henry & Associates, Inc., campus at the northeast corner of Blackman and Battlefield.
