The right of a criminal defendant to receive a fair trial and the right of the press to publish information about a defendant or criminal act are both guaranteed by the U.S. Constitution. Both are valuable and important rights. These two safeguards, however, can conflict when pretrial publicity has the potential to prejudice a potential jury pool, and ultimately deprive a defendant, a victim or the people of a fair and just trial.   • 01/25/16 - SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – Greene County Prosecuting Attorney Dan Patterson announces that Billy Dean Lutz Jr., 55, of Republic, MO was sentenced on Friday for one count of stealing, two counts of forgery, three counts of tampering with a motor vehicle, one count of burglary in the second degree, two counts of felony receiving stolen property, and one count of stealing from a person, following a guilty plea on October 1, 2015.     read more »

  • 01/21/16 - SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – Greene County Prosecuting Attorney Dan Patterson announces that Diane Staudte, 53, of Springfield, Missouri entered a guilty plea to systematically poisoning her family members with antifreeze resulting in the April 8, 2012, death of her sixty year old husband, Mark Staudte; the September 2, 2012, death of her twenty-six year old son, Shaun Staudte; and the June 12, 2013, hospitalization of her twenty-four year old daughter, Sarah Staudte.     read more »

  • 11/19/15 - SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – Greene County Prosecuting Attorney Dan Patterson announces that Kevin Lamarr Williams, 48, of Springfield, MO was convicted today by a Greene County Jury of stealing from a local mother of two, by deceiving her into believing he was going to take her tax refund money to open a joint bank account for the two of them.
