Crime Prevention

Crime Prevention is:

"being aware that a crime can occur, anticipating its form, location, time, and victim, and taking action to reduce the chances of its happening."

The three elements the criminal must possess for a crime to occur are:

  1. Desire
  2. Ability
  3. Opportunity

By eliminating just one of these elements no crime will take place. Generally speaking, we have no control over whether the criminal has the desire or ability to commit crimes. However we have great control over the third element, opportunity.

Crime prevention is using instinct, common sense, and action to eliminate or greatly reduce the criminal's opportunity. Together, we have the ability and desire to reduce the opportunity given to the criminal element and when taking action by practicing CRIME PREVENTION, we as a community benefit greatly.

The effects of crime can be far reaching. Consider some of the following:

  • The fear of walking the streets alone.
  • Being afraid in your own home, neighborhood, or school.
  • Overextended police protection.
  • Overcrowded courts.
  • Higher taxes to support law enforcement, corrections, and judicial systems.
  • Higher prices to replace stolen property.
  • Rising insurance costs.
  • The loss of special items that represent those special memories that insurance can't replace.
  • Personal injury or death.

We are all responsible for our own personal safety and the safety of those around us. This is why it is so important for us to practice CRIME PREVENTION.
