Operation Identification

Operation Identification is a program that aids law enforcement in recovering and returning stolen items back to the crime victim through some innovative methods. Successful operation identification programs help deter burglars and assist in the arrest and prosecution of criminals.

Following are the key components for using the Operation Identification program :

  • Engrave a unique number to you, either a partial social security number or driver's license number, preceded by the letters "MO" and followed by a sequential number on your valuable property. In law enforcement, we refer to this as an "owner applied number" or "OAN". Example of an OAN is : MO 1234 001
  • Record and maintain a thorough record of all of your valuable property. For your convenience, please use our property identification form.
  • Take high quality, close up photographs of your valuables, or if you prefer, you may videotape your property instead. Remember, "a picture is worth a thousand words", and if you are the victim of a loss, this will greatly assist you in filing claims with your insurance company as well as being assisting you with positive identification of your property when recovered.
  • Please store a complete hard copy of your list and photographs away from your residence in case you suffer a loss. Use a safe deposit box or some similar method for this purpose.
  • Contact the Greene County Sheriff's Office for window and door decals identifying your home as being protected by this program. We strongly discourage anyone from using the decals without marking, recording, and photographing their valuables. This helps no one if you become a victim.
